Once you guys have a team that can run the midline properly, do you mix and match different formations to run the Midline? Or I guess I should ask if any of you guys base mostly on running the Midline Option and its variations, and if so what all formations do you use to give the defense different looks?

Midline and it's variations are staples in our option offense. We will run Midline and Tags from every possible formation. Here are a few examples : - Trips sets (Run Midline to Trips and away from Trips) - TE over with SE wide formation ( Run to unbalance and to nub side) -Tackle over with SE wide (same as TE example) -TE & WB on one side and SE & Slot on other side ( The WB can show Rocket or Jet motion towards the SE Flank and then run Midline to TE side inserting the TE as lead blocker ; great misdirection)
Once team understands midline concepts multiple formations can make it look very confusing for the defense.

Once the team gets it - as far as what is the midline used for - formation variations are abundant. Basicically you want to do the following with formations
1. get the three tech where you want want 2. get the fold player out (as denny mentioned - trips - usually go to cover 3. great package with bubble based on strong safety 3. mixing insert player to control fold player and disguise free safety 4. using formation combinationatons to tie in with triple and rocket to wider 5 tech or create flow to backers and free safety 5. get the free afety out of the middle of formation downward fill 6. vary the insertion to create equal or better #'s without defense matching 7. create personnel mismatches (not as much with midline triple as you don't block anybody) 8. create misdirection with twirl motion 9. be able to block 3 men on l.o.s. (te or tackle's over) 10. get people to widen alignment (flex with threat of rocket) also with midline triple 11. create proper #'s 12. soften he corner and with all read plays 13. block the least amount of people possible why nub side away from unbalanced is devastating in this offense.)
these are just a few off my head. there are others. formations - if you keep these rules in place are limitless.

ps - like denny said - if you use TAGS and teach conceptually - you have limitless options and easy to grow on

Very good answers guys. I really appreciate it. I really like the idea of basing an offense on the Midline, because it seems like it can be run with the least amount of athletes in the key positions and you can put a lot of formation window dressing on and keep it a viable means of running an offense. Does this seem like it is the case or am I way off base?

I don't think you can start your offense with midline. This is a triple based offense with midline as an answer. Midline as a base can be stopped and outnumbered

Coach, I am looking forward to seeing you in DC. Who is the insert player? And who is the fold player? From your articles I have the insert being the x tra blocker you bring "over" to account for the FS. Also, I believe the fold player is the SS/OLB type. Any help I can get is much appreciated, as I continue my converson from the wing- t. Delaware was the frst team I saw do "over" in 1996 and they did a lot of "step to".

The insert player is the designated player who inserts in B-C gap for inside lber
The Fold player is the stacked defender who fols inside when the playside o outnumber tHB inserts in order the offense on the QB tuck
